Denver, CO (1888PressRelease) January 03, 2013 - Fix the Debt is a nonpartisan coalition of more than 315,000 members active across the country working to reduce federal debt. Mr. Whalen joins a prestigious group of Colorado bipartisan community and business leaders, current and former members of the Colorado State Legislature, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, and former Colorado Governors Bill Ritter and Richard Lamm in their efforts to call on lawmakers to address the ballooning national debt crisis. Fix The Debt is chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell. Fix the Debt was founded by Erskine Bowles and former Wyoming U.S. Senator Alan Simpson. On the development of the Colorado Steering Committee, Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet commented, "The Colorado Chapter of the Campaign to Fix The Debt will provide additional strength, support and organization from the state to urge Washington to get the job done."
On his appointment to the Colorado Steering Committee, "This is a pressing and time sensitive issue that needs strong leadership," said Attorney Whalen. If lawmakers fail to avert the fiscal cliff, 18% offederal money sent to the states will be eliminated and cuts in federal funding could cost Colorado up to 43,000 jobs. Those cuts will severely impact funding for education, housing, and low income programs.
