- (1888PressRelease) July 22, 2010 - Mr. Charles Burford on February 28, 2010 was honored by the American Society of Baking by being inducted into the ASB Hall of Fame. The formal ceremony was held on March 1, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois.
Charles Burford joined a distinguished group of industry pioneers, leaders and innovators who are recognized by the Society for their innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. Other recent inductees were Sterret Campbell, M. Rella Dwyer, Jack Lewis Sr and Jack Lewis Jr.
Mr. Burford was recognized for his many contributions to the baking industry and for his focus on making good equipment that does the job well, but his biggest and most notable contribution was the Twist Tying Machine. This innovative machine increased product life and made closing bread bags more efficient. It was originally designed from an automatic wire tying bale haler that Charles' father, Earl Burford, made. Although twist tying machines seem like a common part of bakery life today, at the time this was a monumental feat in improving food processing.
Charles Burford's contributions to commercial baking didn't stop there. Others were the Burford Hydraplate Bread Pan Oiler, the Burford Rotary Seeder, the Burford Butter Applicator, and the Burford Pattern Cross Splitter which are still on the market today.
Mr. Burford played a vital role in the industry and will continue to be a fixture in commercial baking. We at the Burford Corporation would like to thank him for all that he has done and continues to do.
