  • Phoenix-Mesa, AZ (1888PressRelease) April 03, 2009 - Between studying, part-time jobs, and extracurricular activities, most young aspiring writers assume they have to wait until adulthood to publish their work. Andrea Colston, president of the publishing house for teens, Youthful Wisdom Press, thinks that’s way too long. The quarterly Youthful Thoughts Anthology contest provides young aspiring writers the opportunity to see their shorter works published before they ‘grow up.’

“The jocks have their athletic competitions, the whiz kids have their science fairs and math leagues, we wanted the young writers to have a similar prize to work toward—and what’s better than the prospect of seeing your work in print? It’s a short-term goal, but the long-term self-confidence benefits can shape a young life,” Colston says of the contest’s inspiration.

With new writing prompts posted to the Youthful Wisdom Press web site every three months, students between the ages of 13 and 18 who are currently enrolled in a school (be that public, charter, home, or alternative) not only have a chance to write about different things, but in different formats as well. The Second Quarter writing prompt is “A Winter's Tale". Fiction or non-fiction, anything goes, as long as it’s under 4,000 words, original and unpublished, and is not violent or excessively profane.

While there is no limit to the amount of entries any writer may submit, there is a $10/per entry fee, which pays for a copy of the anthology. A copy of the anthology will also be donated to each winning writer’s school. All submitters will be notified of the contest results the 1st month following the end of each quarter and winners will be notified via e-mail.

“There's no pressure to be serious or perfect—unless they want to. But yes, ‘spelling’ counts,” Colston laughs as she explains the ‘must be edited’ provision for submitted work. Authors need not worry, self-editing tips are available at the web site.
