To determine the 2012 "Best Law Firm" rankings, U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers asked clients to evaluate law firm practice groups by addressing expertise, responsiveness, understanding of client needs, cost-effectiveness, civility and whether they would refer another client to the firm. Similarly, lawyers were asked to vote on expertise, responsiveness, integrity, cost-effectiveness, whether they would refer a matter to a firm and whether they considered the firm a worthy competitor. In addition to information from the client and lawyer surveys, the rankings incorporated the 3.9 million evaluations of more than 41,000 individual leading lawyers from across the country. Law firms also provided demographic and other relevant information to complete the process. The quantitative and qualitative data were then combined into an overall "Best Law Firms" score for each firm, which were compared to the scores of other firms in the same metropolitan area. Because firms were often separated by small or insignificant differences in their overall scores, a tiering system was used rather than ranking firms sequentially.
