  • (1888PressRelease) July 29, 2015 - The 911 national emergency call number will come into use, after a draft legislation stating the single emergency call number for people to call was approved by the cabinet and passed into Thai law.

Government deputy spokesman Maj-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said having a single emergency call number could help prevent confusion caused by the various emergency call numbers that are in use now.

The existing emergency numbers like 191 and 1669 will still be in use, but calls to these will be automatically redirected to 911.

The spokesman noted that under the bill approved, a false call to the 911 emergency number will face legal action.

"The introduction of a single universal hotline number for emergency calls in Thailand are part of the government and Thai law authorities' ongoing efforts to improve safety and emergency service assistance throughout the kingdom. It is the same emergency call number used in America", said BSA Law spokesman Apisakdi Kongkangwanchoke.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will chair a committee overseeing the operation of the emergency call system. Also on the committee will be the Royal Thai Police commissioner, Information and Communications Technology minister and National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission chairman.
