  • (1888PressRelease) September 16, 2014 - Bangkok - Those who enter Thailand under a 30 day visa exemption will be able to extend their stay to 60 days. Those holding a 60 day tourist visa are still eligible for an extra stay of 30 days as per normal.

The fee for the extension of stay remains unchanged at Bt1,900.

"It's good news for tourists who decide during their visit to Thailand that they want to stay a while longer", said Apisakdi Kongkangwanchoke, spokesman for BSA Law. "For Thailand, it will hopefully boost tourism arrivals which have yet to fully recover following the country's recent political unrest."

At the same time however, immigration authorities have tightened up on visa extension regulations for foreigners who enroll to study Thai in private language schools outside of the official school system, and for those working in a public charity/non-profit organisation or a foreign chamber of commerce. Visa extensions of 90 days will be granted for a total period of stay not exceeding one year.

"Thailand has also introduced new overstay rules which are now in effect and which all foreign visitors should be aware of", said Apisakdi. "These outline the penalties for overstaying a Thai visa."

In July an announcement posted on the immigration bureau's website read: The aliens who violate The Immigration Act, B.E.2522 by overstaying more than 90 days in the Kingdom of Thailand will be forbidden from re-entering the kingdom for a certain period of time as follow :

Overstay more than 90 days forbidden 1 year
Overstay more than 1 year forbidden 3 years
Overstay more than 3 years forbidden 5 years
Overstay more than 5 years forbidden 10 years

In the case that alien is being apprehended

Overstay less than 1 year forbidden 5 years
Overstay more than 1 years forbidden 10 years
