Braemoor Health Center Welcomes Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Braemoor Health Center, a Renowned Skilled Nursing Facility in Brockton, Massachusetts, Informs the Public of Steps to Reduce Risk of Breast Cancer During October Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
- Boston, MA-NH (1888PressRelease) October 09, 2013 - Braemoor Health Center commemorates October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is spreading the word about preventative steps that people can take to help fight the disease.
An estimated 220,000 women and 2000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer every year, according to the World Health Organization. Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in women in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer related death in women. Even though the rate of cancer diagnoses has increased over the years, there has been a steady decline in cases of death since the early 1990's. It is estimated that around $8 billion a year is spent in the United States each year on breast cancer related treatment.
While it is unclear as to what particularly causes breast cancer, there are ways to reduce your risk of diagnosis. According to the Cancer Society of America, some strategies that may help reduce risk include avoiding weight gain and obesity, engaging in regular physical activity and minimizing alcohol intake. Use of estrogen and progestin for treatment of menopausal symptoms has been shown to increase a woman's risk of developing the disease, along with tobacco use, environmental pollutants and exposure to radiation. Ultimately, it is recommended that women over 40 have a mammogram once a year to screen for the development of cancer cells.
