According to Mr. Pappas, a few simple checkups will keep your car in running order and avoid costly complications that so often develop from unattended problems. For instance, tires normally leak a little bit, even if there is no hole in them. As they gradually lose air, they can cause all kinds of problems. Also, to increase the life of your tires, you should have them switch, or rotated, front to back and back to front. This is because the front tires wear differently than the back tires do.

Mr. Pappas further recommends that you replace your windshield wipers once a year. This is because the rubber deteriorates in the heat of summer, and then fail to work properly in the wet winters. You can spend a modest amount of money having your worn timing belt replaces, or hundreds, if not a thousand or more, replacing broken pulleys and gears.
In addition, Mr. Pappas says it is vitally important to have the cooling system flushed at around 100,000 to 120,000 miles. Sediments are going to form in the cooling system, and there will be some evaporation even in a sealed system. The coolant also circulates through the heater core which powers the cabin heater on your car. When the coolant system is neglected, sediment builds up in the heater core and will often make it rust out. The sediment will also build up on the coils, keeping your car from being effectively cooled.
