  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) October 14, 2010 - The skylines of New York City and New Jersey set the backdrop for Industrial and Office Brokers Association of the New York Metropolitan Area's (IOREBA) recent Boat Cruise around Manhattan, which was co-hosted by the Industrial/Commercial Real Estate Women, Inc. (ICREW NJ) and Certified Commercial Investment Members (CCIM) NJ/NY. More than 100 members and guests attended the event, which included dinner and networking in addition to a featured speaker.

The audience of real estate brokers and professionals looked for specifics as the evening's speaker, Sharon McStine of Port Authority of NY & NJ, discussed the 2014 opening of the Panama Canal, the height issues with the Bayonne Bridge and what it all means for New Jersey's economy. In addition, McStine talked about the Port's activity, noting that The Port of New York and New Jersey is currently the largest port on the East Coast and the third largest in the nation.

McStine stressed there are many options being considered to extend the clearance of the Bayonne Bridge to at least 215 feet above sea level, which will allow larger container ships to easily navigate area ports after the Panama Canal opening. The adjustment is expected to reduce the cost of shipping through the Port of New York and New Jersey due to the use of larger vessels.

"The members in attendance had a wide range of questions regarding the future of business in the Tri-State area," stated Sean Brady, President of IOREBA and Senior Director of Cushman & Wakefield. "Sharon was very informative and helped guests to understand how the expansion will effect the competitive positioning of our area ports."

In recent months, the Port Authority has acquired 98-acres of land at Global Terminal in Jersey City and Bayonne, expanding the terminal to 170 acres, and a significant portion of the Military Ocean Terminal at Bayonne. The agency was also authorized to move ahead with the purchase and redevelopment of Greenville Yard, a century-old rail yard in Jersey City that will open in 2013. These acquisitions will assist in the handling of future cargo growth to the state.

With roots dating back to 1927, IOREBA is one of the nation's largest regional commercial real estate groups; the group has grown to more than 300 members that conduct business in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. To assist its members in difficult economic times, IOREBA has cut costs for events and membership to ensure members are able to take full advantage of everything the organization has to offer.

The Boat Cruise is part of an ongoing series of events featuring industry experts as guest speakers and providing members and guests a variety of networking opportunities. For more information on membership or upcoming events, visit http://www.ioreba.com/.
