Bluff Plantation Establishes Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program with the Medical College of Georgia

- Augusta-Richmond County, GA-SC (1888PressRelease) September 06, 2018 - Bluff Plantation has established a fellowship program in partnership with the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University to offer physicians advanced training in addiction medicine.
The one-year addiction medicine program, which provides physicians with rigorous, hands on, scientifically driven clinical education in evaluating and treating alcohol and drug addiction and dual disorders, launched earlier this year.
“Millions of Americans are suffering as a result of the opioid addiction epidemic and other addictive disorders, and too few get the treatment they need,” said Bluff Plantation Medical Director Williams S. Jacobs, MD. “There’s an urgent need to educate and train more physicians to help patients recover from drug and alcohol addiction, which causes so much harm to individuals and their families.”
Dr. Jacobs, a nationally renowned expert in addiction treatment who is triple board certified in anesthesiology, pain medicine and addiction medicine, is program director for the fellowship program. He also serves as Chief of Addiction Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Health Behavior at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.
Bluff Plantation recently welcomed its first two fellows, Jonathan Ek, MD, a family practice physician, and Brett Daniel Kaylor, DO, a psychiatrist. Fellows do clinical rotations at Bluff Plantation’s residential treatment program near Augusta, Ga. and at RiverMend Health Center of Augusta, which offers a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP). Rotations cover all levels of addiction treatment – hospital inpatient, residential, detoxification, partial hospitalization and outpatient settings.
With a focus on incorporating research-based innovations into everyday addiction treatment, fellows will also learn about pharmacotherapy for addiction, abstinence-based recovery models, consultation for medical and psychiatric hospital services and psychosocial approaches to the treatment of patients with addiction and chronic pain.
Addiction medicine was formally recognized as a medical subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties in 2016. Addiction medicine is the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of people with the disease of addiction, including nicotine, alcohol, prescription pain medications and other illegal drugs.
