Blue Ridge Scenic Railway Story Revealed
Local author honors the history of railway in new book.
- Atlanta, GA (1888PressRelease) February 05, 2015 - The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing's Images of Rail series is Blue Ridge Scenic Railway by local author Melissa Beck. Set to publish in mid February, this new title contains around 200 vintage images that tell the story of this North Georgia trade route and its importance in American history. "This is not just a book for train buffs; rather, it is a story of the people, towns and happenings surrounding the startup and life of a train route in the North Georgia Mountains," Beck said.
Using images and stories donated from local residents' private collections, the story gives the reader a personal insight into life along this North Georgia trade route from its mid-1800's stirrings to early 20th century peak. The author stated, "This is a photographic history of the copper miners, shop owners, homesteaders, and railroad workers who made these mountains their homes, often for many proud generations."
"I hope my book will be a celebration of Fannin, Polk and surrounding counties folks-a word that to me better describes the warmth and kinship of these people and their kindness to me," Beck said. "I hope readers get a fond feeling for them, like I did, and enjoy this train history because of the crews, passengers, financiers, and shippers making it so much more than steam, steel and wooden tracks."
Highlights of Blue Ridge Scenic Railway include:
- Images of this particular train route that include the Civil War, Cherokee Indians and mining tales.
- Links between local families and the train's history
- Images related to the large copper mining industry of Fannin and Polk Counties.
