Bloomberg BusinessWeek Rates Babson Among Best Undergraduate B-Schools For Sustainability
Based on online surveys students rate Babson top business school for sustainability.
- (1888PressRelease) June 04, 2013 - Babson College was ranked one of Bloomberg's 2013 Top 10 Best Undergraduate Business schools for Sustainability. The ranking was based on student responses to surveys asking them to rate their programs sustainability offerings. Babson College made the list among other green schools including William & Mary, Santa Clara, and Loyola Marymount.
Enacting a deep commitment to sustainability, Babson College works across all areas to ensure steps are being taken to streamline green practices throughout campus. Babson is currently a signatory of the American College and University President's Climate Commitment and a Silver Ranking and charter participant in Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS), a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to gauge relative progress toward sustainability. Babson boasts a 350-acre organically maintained campus, locally sourced dining hall offerings, and focus on highlighting sustainable career choices for students.
The students are a main driver behind Babson's progress instilling sustainable practices on campus and within the institutional culture. Babson's Sustainability Office, established in 2010, is staffed by GreenerU, Inc. - an innovative higher education-focused sustainability and energy services company which assists Babson in operating its sustainability program. The Sustainability Office hires student interns, who assist in promoting various activities and initiatives on campus such as their annual sustainability fair, campus eco-wide challenges, and environmental action workshop series.
Going forward Babson hopes to propel, enhance, and promote existing sustainability commitments as well provide the resources for students and faculty to develop new practices, incentives, and activities across campus.
Methodology
The ranking is based on student responses to the question asking them to rank their program's sustainability offerings. Points are awarded for each response-one point for an A grade through five points for a grade of F-and then averaged for each school. If a student did not have exposure to the area in question, they could answer NA, and their response was not included. The ranking is based on the average; schools with the lowest average are ranked the highest. The average sustainability score for all 124 undergraduate business schools in the ranking was 1.66. Babson scored 1.314 and was ranked number 7 on the list.
