  • Denver, CO (1888PressRelease) January 05, 2012 - Recent research has demonstrated that lactic acid-based antimicrobials, such as Birko's BeefxideŽ, are effective in reducing non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) in beef trimmings.

"We have demonstrated that BeefxideŽ is highly effective against E. coli O157:H7, and this research supports our expectation that it will be effective against the non-O157 STECs as well," said Dr. Elis Owens, a chemist/microbiologist at Birko. BeefxideŽ is also effective in reducing Salmonella, Campylobacter and Listeria. The research was conducted by Colorado State University and funded by the American Meat Institute Foundation.

BeefxideŽ has been approved by the USDA for use as an antimicrobial processing aid on beef intended for human consumption. BeefxideŽ is formulated from FDA-approved ingredients and all components of the formula are GRAS. BeefxideŽ is also suitable for use on products to be labeled as natural or organic.
