- Salem, OR (1888PressRelease) May 13, 2011 - Steven W. Smith, Director of Operations for Oregon Department of Education, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Steven W. Smith's commitment to excellence in Education.
Smith, who holds both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Education from Western Oregon University, began his career as a substitute teacher during the 1998-99 academic school year. After earning his master's degree he began working in a youth correctional facility and spent the next five years as a special education case manager.
Since that time, Smith has spent just over five years working for the Oregon Department of Education. In his current role, he manages and oversees four significant work units within the Office of Student Learning and Partnerships. These four units include special education data, fiscal, legal and information. He also supervises seventeen staff members across the work units.
"I have always enjoyed helping others to learn and grow," Smith said in regards to his work. "I always like to take on new challenges."
At this point in his career, Smith is content right where he is. Having only been in his current position for just under a year, he is hoping to continue to grow into the position and improve his leadership skills. Eventually, though, he would like to return to school and pursue a doctoral degree in education.
Smith is a member of several organizations, including the American Association of School Administrators, Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, Correctional Education Association, Council for Exceptional Children, National Association of Secondary School Principals and National Middle School Association. He was elected to the Board of the Education Information Management Advisory Consortium for the Council of Chief State School Officers, served as vice-chairman of the special education subcommittee for one year and also served as chairman. He was also re-elected to the Board as a member-at-large recently for a one-year term. In his free time, Steven enjoys spending time with his family, reading and exercising.
