  • Charleston, WV (1888PressRelease) February 11, 2011 - Sandra A. Sokol, NREMT-P/Suppression Lieutenant for Dale City Volunteer Fire Department and Fire Fighter/EMT Instructor at Monroe Technology Center , has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Sandra A. Sokol's commitment to excellence in Fire/EMS Education and Training.

Sokol, who holds a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Lock Haven University, began as a volunteer firefighter during her college years in 1992.

As a paramedic and fire suppression officer, Sokol provides emergency medical services and fire suppression services on a volunteer basis to the community where she serves. As lieutenant of fire suppression and medic with the department, she runs two duty crews per week, one night on the fire engine and the other night on the medic. Responsible for her entire crew and her apparatus, she supervises anywhere from two to eight personnel. She responds to calls involving auto accidents, medical emergencies, structure fires, gas leaks, public assistance and traumatic injuries.

In her role as a fire fighter and EMT instructor for Monroe Technology Center in Leesburg, Sokol teaches and provides practical training to high school students throughout the county of Loudoun that sign up for her class. She instructs to all Department of Transportation and National Fire Protection Agency standards as well as the Virginia Commonwealth standards for EMS and fire training. Her students take the Virginia Commonwealth certification tests in EMT-First Responder, EMT-Basic, Fire Fighter Level I and II, Hazmat Awareness and Hazmat Operations.

Sokol's desire to teach and train in fire/rescue is something she loves to do everyday. After accepting the volunteer challenge in exchange for room and board during her college days, she never would have guessed that she'd still be working in the field all these years later. "I figured I could do the job for the two years I had left in college and save a bunch of money doing so," she explained. "I never imaged that the fire service would become my life."

Giving credit to her parents for maintaining a career that would make her happy, Sokol aspires to become a director of training at a state level or a professor at a college level program in either fire or EMS. "Education in fire and EMS is my passion in life," she said. "To teach people how to do this job is an unexplainable reward."

A member of National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and the National Association of EMS Educators, Sokol has also earned numerous letters of commendations and a Life Saving Commendation in her field. She was also rewarded with an EMS Provider of the Year Award. In her free time, Sandra enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her family.
