- Detroit, MI (1888PressRelease) January 21, 2011 - Norman Clayton Hurns, Executive Director for Brothers Making a Difference (BMAD), has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Norman Clayton Hurns's commitment to excellence in the field of Non-Profit.
Hurns, who holds a Bachelor of Liberal Art's Degree from Xavier University, followed by a Master's Degree in Education from Walsh University, began his career working as a teacher in Akron, Ohio before founding his not-for-profit organization.
In the fall of 2000, Hurns started a mentoring program at Samuel C. Mumford High School, which eventually turned into his non-profit in 2006, in an effort to address many of the social hurdles that handicapped young men faced. As executive director of the organization, he developed a curriculum and designed the lead program, Expose and Explore, for boys from the ages of 9-11. He administers all grant funding, fundraising and partnerships with school districts, community organizations and cultural institutions. He also manages the annual Father's Day Brunch and is lead instructor for the Project Positive Image and Parenting programs.
His passion and vision, along with a commitment to young people, is what has made Hurns so successful. "The realization of the void that exists because of social, political and economic situations in young males' experiences sparked my vision for BMAD," he explained. Hoping to establish BMAD and the Expose and Explore Summer Program as a national program, Hurns also plans to further develop the parenting component and establish college scholarships funded by the organization in the near future.
Hurns is an associate fellow of the Institute for the Study of the Africa-American Child, and is a member Michigan Counseling Association and Michigan Council for History Education. He is also a board member for Heritage Works and Eagle Sports. He's received numerous awards, including a President's Council Leadership Award from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Gamma Lambda Chapter, and a Diversity Champion Honor Roll Award from Race Relations and Diversity Task Force, both in 2009. In 2010, he was the recipient of an Outstanding Parent Award from True Family Values, a Spirit of Detroit Award and an Appointment to the Michigan Veteran's Memorial Park Commission. He has been featured in African American Family Magazine, Michigan Citizen and the Detroit Free Press and on Wake Up Detroit, Channel 4 Detroit WDIV for his non-profit work. In his free time, Norman enjoys music, traveling and photography.
