- Syracuse, NY (1888PressRelease) June 15, 2011 - Mary Alice Smothers, Coordinator at People's Equal Action Community Effort, Inc. (PEACE), has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Mary Alice Smothers's commitment to excellence in Non-Profit.
Smothers, who holds an Associate's Degree from Brant and Stratton College, began working in her industry over thirty years ago.
After discovering how poor the area in which Smother's worked was, being the ninth poorest in the United States, and having a passion for working with low-income families and at-risk youth, she realized that her work would become more than just a job, but a passion.
As coordinator, Smothers develops and implements programs for low-income families, assists them with completion of paperwork, helps them find employment, clothing, food and furniture, finds safe and affordable housing for them and even negotiates with landlords on rent and with utility companies. In addition, she operates an after school program for twenty at-risk youth, providing homework assistance and social skills and an all-day summer program for thirty youth that receive literacy, social and recreational activities.
Having formerly worked with the Department of Justice, Smothers' three decades of expertise working with the youth, gangs and at-risk youth have really helped her reach the pinnacle of her career. Hoping to one day a have a facility of her own, she'd like to open a place where youth of all ages can come and feel free to express themselves and become productive leaders in society.
Smothers is the recipient of a Risk Takers and Dream Makers Award from the Near Westside Initiative. She also created a pocket park for retired seniors to go and relax, cookout, share stories and mentor youth by teaching them how to play dominoes and checkers. In her free time, Mary volunteers with Home Head Quarters and also enjoys reading and doing floral arrangements.
