  • Nashville, TN (1888PressRelease) January 11, 2012 - Martha K. Nixon, Teacher for Shelbyville Central High School, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Martha K. Nixon's commitment to excellence in Education.

Nixon, who earned her Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Middle Tennessee State University, began working in her field in 1973 as a first year teacher at James K. Shook Elementary School. She has since taught chemistry, biology and general science and is now in her thirty-sixty year in public education. She has taught in almost every area, including preschool, grade school and high school, in both gifted and remedial studies. She has even served as a principal and at the central office as a technology director and grant writer.

After retiring after thirty years of service and then deciding to get back into the field, Nixon is currently teaching six classes of ninth grade physical science and has taught chemistry, biology and many other subjects.

"Teaching in a classroom is where my heart is," Nixon said. "I also enjoy working with other teachers. I find it very inspiring to listen to teachers that have found a new trick or method that works for them."

Having found it very rewarding to work with first year teachers as a mentor and colleague, Nixon sees herself teaching teachers in the near future, since retirement is not something she wants to do anytime soon.

Nixon is currently working on her first book, a collection of essays of current issues in education. She is a member of the National Education Association, the Tennessee Education Association and the National Council of Teachers of Science. She also serves on the board of directors for the Tennessee Science Teachers Association and is a past director of ICHOPE. She has presented at numerous local, regional and national in-service trainings and other meetings, and has served on numerous other boards and committees. Nixon is also the recipient of numerous awards throughout her career, including being named Teacher of the Year, Principal of the Year, and three technology awards. She has also received a Distinguished Educator Award and a Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen Award, both through Grundy County. When Martha isn't busy working or volunteering her time, she enjoys quilting, reading and watching sports.
