- Springfield, MA (1888PressRelease) January 15, 2011 - Lillian Pearsall, Clinical Coordinator and Diabetes Education Program Coordinator for the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Lillian Pearsall's commitment to excellence in the field of Healthcare.
Pearsall, who earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1969 from the University of Massachusetts, worked as a teacher for three and a half years before going back to school to earn her Associate's Degree in Nursing from Greenfield Community College. In 1979, she became a full-time nurse and was later promoted to clinical coordinator on the night shift fifteen years later, given the extra task of developing a diabetes education program, which is now nationally recognized by the American Diabetes Association. A real dream come true for her, Pearsall was now able to combine her two degrees, nursing and education.
As a clinical coordinator for the program, Pearsall developed an education program for veterans with diabetes, primarily outpatients. She assesses their understanding of the condition and educates them on self-management skills. She meets their needs on many levels, from the pre-diabetic state through the mild diabetic on diet and exercise regimen, as well as those patients on insulin. She works with patients both in groups and individually, in conjunction with other endocrinologists, dieticians and pharmacists. "I'm involved in a group medical appointment program," Pearsall explained, "where I handle the education component of patients with diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels."
Contributing a true passion to educate and her love for her patients, Pearsall is proud to have chosen her career path. Having expanded her program from the main campus to outlying outpatient clinics in Springfield, Greenfield and Pittsfield, she plans to continue to actively work in the program, mentor as a registered nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator within her community, in addition to running a diabetes support group at her local YMCA.
Pearsall is a member of the American Diabetes Association, American Association of Diabetes Educators and Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs. She has received a Certificate of Achievement through the American Diabetes Association for her diabetes education program, and has also met national standards through the association with Recognition Awards in 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2010. In her free time, Lillian enjoys fitness, reading, crocheting, photography and traveling.
