- St. Louis, MO-IL (1888PressRelease) January 22, 2011 - Katina M. Harshbarger, Special Education Teacher for University City High School, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Katina M. Harshbarger's commitment to excellence in the field of Education.
Harshbarger, who holds a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education from Southeast Missouri State University, followed by a Master's Degree in Severe Disabilities from Webster University, began teaching seven years ago, working in a middle school setting for four years before teaching high school students.
Teaching the Community Based Vocation Instruction program, which focuses on teaching vocational and functional skills, Harshbarger knew at an early age that she wanted to work with special needs students. "I knew I had a passion to teach from a very young age," she said. "I started to work with individuals with disabilities while I was just in high school myself."
Contributing a "big heart and a lot of passion" for what she does, Harshbarger says that her students show her everyday how much they can do and develop into active members of ours society. "I learn so much about life and happiness when I work with these individuals," she said.
Harshbarger's short-term goal is to teach community based transition service, which works with young adults from ages eighteen to twenty-one that require further development of vocational and life skills. Long-term though, she would like to become a transition facilitator, allowing her to work with other teachers more of a leadership role.
A member of CEC, Katina is a strong supporter of the Autism Society of America. In her free time, she volunteers with the local Elks Lodge and enjoys scrapbooking and reading.
