- Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine, CA (1888PressRelease) September 03, 2011 - John L. Smith, Professor at Santiago Canyon Community College, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes John L. Smith's commitment to excellence in Education.
Smith, who holds a Master's Degree in Mathematics from San Diego State University, began teaching in 1966 as a junior high school mathematics teacher in the state of Washington at Highline School District. From there he taught junior/senior mathematics before moving to California to teach at the college level where he has been teaching for the past thirty-six years.
In his current role, Smith teaches mathematics courses ranging from basic arithmetic through third semester calculus, including differential equations and linear algebra. He is a member of the Faculty Association of Rancho Santiago Community College District where he serves as treasurer of the union and their Political Action Committee. He has also served as college senator to the Academic Senate, vice-president and president of the senate. He has been elected for a third time to the state Faculty Association of the California Community Colleges as a member of the governing board and currently serves as union liaison to the California Community College Independents where he currently serves as treasurer. Smith is also the appointed liaison to the California Academic Senate for CCCI.
Contributing professional workshops and annual meetings of community college mathematics teachers, which encourage innovation and the use of technology in the classroom, Smith says he is able to better contribute his knowledge and expertise to his students.
"I believe my department, which I helped build through numerous hiring committees, is in the forefront when it comes to using technology in the classroom, Smith said. "They offer online courses for our diverse student population and meet stiff accreditation standards that demand thoughtful course objectives and measured assessment of student progress through our programs."
Looking forward to reorganizing the representative union to include part-time instructors on his board, Smith is always ready to take on new challenges. Currently, he is a member of the American Mathematical Association for Two Year Colleges, is on the editorial board of the InFACCC, a nationally recognized magazine, and has served as editor of the Farsight union newsletter for nineteen years. He has received numerous awards throughout his teaching career, including being named Faculty of the Year in 1996 at Santa Anna College, and was also nominated for the Santiago Canyon Award. FACCC has also recognized his years of service with plaques twice, in 1993 and 1996.
