  • Lewiston, ID-WA (1888PressRelease) January 16, 2012 - Ingrid E. Spence, Community Partnership Coordinator for the University of Idaho's College of Education, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Ingrid E. Spence's commitment to excellence in Higher Education.

Spence, who holds a BA in Theater from the University of California and an MAT in English from the University of Idaho, is a National Board Certified Teacher in Early Adolescent English Language Arts and is a certified candidate support provider. She began her teaching career by conducting private theater classes in 1987 before teaching public school English and Drama from 1988-2011. In 2006, she also took on the Lead Peer Mentor position in her school district, a role she continues today. In 2011, she landed her university position as Community Partnership Coordinator.

Coordinating the service learning experiences between the college's education students and the community, Spence also supervises the placement experiences of practicum students from various levels of education classes in area schools, teaches classes to education majors, serves the Moscow School District by overseeing the newly hired teachers and their mentors, and also runs several professional development workshops.

"Having lived in a university town, I have always appreciated the availability of teacher education students to help in my classroom. I have always felt that the partnership with the university was of benefit to my students, my classroom and school, as well as to the university students themselves," Spence said.

Hoping to continue to develop and strengthen the partnerships between the College of Education, the community and the local schools, Spence would also like to broaden her experiences by mentoring National Board for Professional Teaching Standards teacher candidates and possibly teaching abroad, perhaps in Ukraine.

Spence is a member of Idaho Mentor Network, National Education Association, National Council for Teachers of English, Association for Supervision Curriculum and Development and Northwest Inland Writing Project. She has also received an IREX International Teaching Exchange Fellowship through the US State Department, serving as a teacher fellow in Ukraine. She was named Teacher of the Year in 2008 through Moscow Education Association, and has also been published in The Inland Journal and the National Writing Project.
