  • Houston, TX (1888PressRelease) December 29, 2011 - Carma Peņa, Care Advocate and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for United Behavioral Health, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Carma Peņa's commitment to excellence in Managed Care and Therapy.

Peņa, who holds a Bachelor's Degree in Theology and a Master's Degree in Christian Counseling, both from Oral Roberts University, began pursuing her marriage and family therapy licensure at Tulsa Elementary School. She spent time providing therapeutic and case management services to child survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and also worked part-time in an outpatient mental health clinic before gaining enough credits to obtain licensure and acquire a full-time position in managed care.

Now fully licensed through the state of Texas, Peņa manages the outpatient behavioral health benefits of members that are covered by United Healthcare from both a utilization and risk perspective. She also identifies treatment gaps and makes applicable recommendations to improve member outcomes as well as the explanation of benefits and education regarding the managed care process.

"I think my primary inspiration for being a marriage and family therapist was my own childhood," Peņa explained. "I grew up in an environment of domestic violence, sexual assault and substance abuse. To some degree I feel that my career path was not a choice but rather a calling."

Hoping to continue her education and travel across the world to study different cultures and customs, Peņa has a strong desire to impact and enrich the lives of everyone she meets.

Peņa is trained and certified in a therapeutic approach known as Parent Child Interaction Therapy, as well as Adoption Home Based Studies. She has spoken numerous times on the effects of domestic violence on children for various local community mental health agencies, for training videos and for local news. When Carma isn't busy working, she enjoys travelling, music and art.
