The selection recognizes Anitha Thomas's commitment to excellence in Education.
- Newark, NJ (1888PressRelease) February 10, 2011 - Anitha Thomas, Fifth Grade Teacher for Benjamin Franklin Middle School, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Anitha Thomas's commitment to excellence in Education.
Thomas, who holds BS cum laude from New York University, followed by a Master's Degree in Literacy from Pace University, began teaching in September of 2002, and has been with her current middle school for the past nine years. She spent the first two years of her career teaching sixth grade before taking over her fifth grade classroom.
As a teacher, Thomas spends much of her time planning and implementing lessons and activities within her classroom. She implements strategies that involve all types of learners, meeting the needs of all her students. She works collaboratively with colleagues and other educational professionals to specifically meet the needs of special education students within her classroom, and modifies activities and assignments for them accordingly. "My love of learning, as well as the wonderful education I received has prepared me to become the teacher I am today," Thomas explained. She also noted that having grown up in the same town where she now teaches, she has had some amazing teachers herself that both inspired and helped prepare her for her role.
Planning to continue to teach middle school, Thomas hopes to someday take advantage of her master's degree by perhaps working with students who struggle with reading by becoming a literacy coach. "I want to continue to educate and encourage my students to reach their highest potential," she said.
A member of the New Jersey Education Association and Teaneck Township Educator's Association, Thomas was featured on an episode of Classroom Close Up NJ a few years ago during their 2006-07 season, highlighting her career. In her free time, Anitha enjoys baking, learning new languages and traveling.
