  • Phoenix-Mesa, AZ (1888PressRelease) December 21, 2010 - Adrienne C. Scheck, Ph.D., Principle Investigator at Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI), has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Adrienne C. Scheck's commitment to excellence in the Healthcare industry.

Scheck, who holds a BA in Biology from the University of Rochester, followed by a PhD in Biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been working in her field for over thirty years.

After completing her postdoctoral fellowship in viral oncology at Pennsylvania State University in 1985, Scheck worked on AIDS-related dementia at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center before becoming directly involved in brain tumor research. She's also an Adjunct Professor in the Molecular Biosciences and Biotechnology Department at Arizona State University.

Scheck's research is primarily focused on understanding therapy resistance and developing novel therapies for brain tumors. She is also involved in the development of new prognostic markers for brain tumors. She and her laboratory team collaborate with other scientists around the world to leverage their areas of expertise with her own to further the understanding of brain tumors. "I wanted to be a scientist for as long as anyone can remember," she said. "In the sixth grade, my grandfather died of stomach cancer. That was when I knew I wanted to get into cancer research." Her goal is to partner with clinicians to move her laboratory work into clinical trials for cancer patients. She aspires to continue contributing to successful treatments for cancer and educating future scientists based on her experience and knowledge.

In addition to her professional life, Scheck is active in the community. She is a co-investigator on an educational grant to the Arizona Science Center from the National Institutes of Health. She mentors high school and college students, assists medical fellows with research projects, runs the Scientific Enrichment Program for Students at the BNI and participates in numerous educational advisory committees for local schools. She's on the advisory board for Arizona's first Science and Technology Expo and is on the committee that's hosting the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. She is also on the Board of Directors and past Board Chair of Southwest Behavioral Health Services. Scheck is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research and the Society for Neuro-Oncology. She serves as a reviewer for a number of professional journals and is on the editorial board of Cancer Genetics & Cytogenetics. In 1998, Adrienne was named Researcher of the Year by YWCA.
