Precious metals bullion is a unique financial instrument; one is purchasing a holding in an actual physical metal, a metal that has stood the test of time and been proven to hold its value against paper currencies.
Platinum was briefly overtaken by gold last week as gold soared amidst the macroeconomic turmoil that followed S&P's downgrading of the US's triple-A credit rating. Platinum sees much of its demand coming from industry so it is slightly less attractive in times of economic uncertainty; however, it quickly regained its position and is likely to continue to rise as the stock market recovers. Palladium also sees a large portion of its demand coming from industry, the automotive industry in particular.
