BigIQKids Launches BigIQKids Times e-Newspaper Written For Kids, By Kids
This weekly, interactive publication is designed to engage young readers in ways that boost their reading comprehension, writing, spelling, deductive reasoning, research and reporting skills, not to mention their confidence.
- Abilene, TX (1888PressRelease) October 20, 2010 - BigIQKids.com, an online suite of e-Learning programs for K-8 students, recently launched the BigIQKids Times e-Newspaper written for kids, by kids.
Each issue of BigIQKids Times opens with our kid-centric advice columns, "Dear Alexis" and "Dear Jake." Readers are encouraged to send in their questions about school, friendship, family, peer pressure, etc. Our young writers Alexis and Jake will choose several questions each week and offer advice. Kids are invited to submit questions using only their first name and last initial for privacy and safety.
Each week, BigIQKids Times also will feature a funny cartoon with one noticeable difference - no text. Kids are prompted to use their imaginations and writing skills to come up with their own funny words and scenarios to fit the picture. We'll choose the best submission and post the text the next week.
Another regular feature, "5 Minute Mystery" is a short mystery story that takes just five minutes to read. The only thing missing is the ending.
Kids then are prompted to solve the mystery and, with a click of the mouse, find out if they're right. This exercise helps sharpen kids' reading comprehension and deductive reasoning skills. Our "5 Minute Mystery" stories often will include historical facts. For instance, our first installment centers on the 1968 assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy.
The "BigIQ Ongoing Story" is another outlet for young readers to give their imaginations a boost and improve their writing, spelling, grammar and story structure skills. We've started the story titled "Today's a Great Day!" Readers are invited to send in one or two paragraphs, one of which will be published in the next week's issue. This feature is more than a skill-builder, it's a confidence builder.
Each online issue of BigIQKids Times just might encourage the budding journalist in your child. Kids are invited to become BigIQKids reporters, writing about any nonfiction subject that captures their attention - a person, product, current or historical event or issue. Tips remind them to research and collect all the facts and supporting details about their story; craft a story structure that includes a beginning, middle and end; add photographs and other images; and to double check their facts.
Approved stories will be published in future issues.
