Voluntary unpaid blood donors are indeed vital for ensuring a sufficient, stable blood supply.
- (1888PressRelease) June 16, 2013 - World Blood Donor Day - WBDD, celebrated on 14 June every year to commemorate the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the Nobel Prize winner who discovered the ABO blood group system serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. With the slogan "Give the gift of life: donate blood", this year's campaign, the 10th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day had focus on the value of donated blood to the patient, not only in saving life, but also in helping people live longer and more productive lives.
Around 107 million units of blood donations are collected globally every year. Nearly 50% of these blood donations are collected in high-income countries, home to 15% of the world's population.
India today's population of 1,020 million requires 9.5 million units per year. But only 5.5 million units per year are available, leading to 40 per cent shortage. It is expected in general that about 1 - 3% of a country's population should donate blood voluntarily to meet the entire demands of the country. World Health Organization - WHO has set year 2020 as the target year for all countries to obtain 100% of blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors.
Considering the fact that in India today the age group 18 - 24 constitutes more than 50% of blood donors, Prof BR Natarajan President - Vice Chancellor gave a clarion call in August 2012 urging the faculty and students of Sangam University to take up voluntary blood donation on a regular basis as a mission with passion and put Bhilwara among top ranking cities for blood donation.
