  • (1888PressRelease) May 31, 2024 - A new, state-of-the-art refueling facility spanning over six acres and storage of 8,270 kiloliters of premium quality Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) was recently inaugurated at the Manohar International Airport in Mopa, Goa. The new facility can refuel aircraft at the 13 parking bays of the Goa airport, considerably reducing flight turnaround time.

The new facility consists of an intricate underground network of pipelines connected to Aviation Turbine Fuel tanks along with refueler hydrants for rapid and efficient refueling of aircraft.

The entire refueling process is seamless and automated with professional and skilled Bharat Petroleum personnel conducting the process using advanced controls to ensure the right volume of ATF is pumped at the right pressure and temperature. The refueling farm also consists of an advanced fire hydrant system to counter any emergencies, should they occur.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Sukhmal Kumar Jain, Director (Marketing) BPCL, Kanwarbir Singh Kalra, Deputy CEO, Manohar International Airport, Srikanth Bhandarkar, Chief Commercial Officer at the airport, Kamlesh Poonia, CISF-Commandant, A Haridas, Assistant commissioner of Customs, Manohar International Airport, along with senior leadership from BPCL, Kani Amudhan, ED (CPO), Dinabandhu Mondal, ED Engineering & Projects, Sanjeev Raina, ED, HSSE, S. Abbas Akhtar, ED, PR & Brand and Sanjeev Kumar, Head Aviation Business

The Manohar International Airport (GOX) is located near the Mopa township in the Pernem Taluka of North Goa. The new airport is expected to reduce and eventually take over domestic and international passenger and freight operations from the current Dabolim International Airport located midway between Margao and Vasco Da Gama cities of South Goa and North Goa respectively. The Dabolim International Airport (GOI) was built by the erstwhile Portuguese invaders of Goa.

After Goa was liberated from oppressive Portuguese dominance, the Dabolim International Airport primarily served as a hub for the Indian Navy’s aviation and coast guard operations. The Indian Naval Air Station Hansa is based at the Dabolim International Airport.

However, due to an increase in India’s military might, the importance of defending the naval base, INS Kadamba in Karwar, Karnataka, home to India’s aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya and the Arihant class nuclear submarines, it was decided to build a new civilian airport in Goa in the Pernem Taluka.

The new refueling farm is the 73rd facility of its kind opened across airports in India by Bharat Petroleum, a Navratna enterprise of the Indian government. The Manohar International Airport at Mopa, Goa is expected to increase the number of domestic and international passenger and freight flights to the western state, which is hailed as the fifth most popular sun-sea-sand tourist destination of the world.

The importance of the Manohar International Airport can be gauged from the fact that the erstwhile Dabolim International Airport that served Goa, handled over 8.3 million passengers and more than 50,000 passenger flights and freighters.

With Dabolim International Airport expected to revert to military operations, the Manohar International Airport will witness an increase in flight and passenger handling in the coming years, with Bharat Petroleum playing a major role in this growth.
