- (1888PressRelease) June 23, 2011 - During his visit Sir Peter, who was appointed Master of the Queen's Music in 2004, will travel from the remote Orkney Islands, where he lives, to teach a group of nine advanced composers with the aid of the Ligeti String Quartet, resident throughout the course.
Sir Peter's massive output (over 300 works and counting) includes operas and music theatre works, ballets, symphonies, string quartets, works for small and large forces, works for children and young people, sacred works, works that criticise religiosity or materialism, works whose purpose is simply pure, poetic description. His dedicatees include Sir Paul McCartney, the late Orcadian poet (and his collaborator) George Mackay Brown, and Her Majesty the Queen,
Convinced that music and art have crucial roles to play in civilising our society, Sir Peter is well known for candidly expressing strongly principled views on matters as diverse as the second war in Iraq, the desecration of the planet and what for him is the pernicious and omnipresent irritation of muzak. Recently he raised eyebrows by suggesting that those who leave their mobile phones switched on in concert halls should be fined.
The Ligeti Quartet gives a public concert at 8 pm on 12 July as part of Benslow Music's new Summer Music Festival. Their programme includes the world premiere of a new String Quartet by Rachel Lockwood as well as Sir Peter's own Naxos Quartet No 8, which he will introduce himself.
Members of the press are invited to meet Sir Peter for a thirty-minute informal encounter at 11 am on Monday 11 July at Benslow Music. Please let us know before 4 July if you would like to come or send a representative. There will be photographic opportunities as well as opportunities for brief one-on-one interviews with radio and television broadcasters.
For further information please call Vicky or Stephen on 01462 459446.
