Beacon Hill-Cyrville Candidates Confirm Attendance to Municipal Debate Despite Ongoing Investigation
Amid rising controversy in the Beacon Hill-Cyrville ward, three Community Associations have teamed up to hold candidates accountable in an All Candidates Debate, where Tierney and Schurter will be fielding questions that come straight from the constituency they seek to represent.

On October 17, 2018 at 7 pm, Beacon Hill Community Association (BHCA), together with Pineview Community Association (PCA) and Rothwell Heights Property Owners’ Association (RHPOA) will partner to host a Municipal Candidates Debate – to be held at Colonel By High School and broadcast live on social media. All candidates for Councillor and OCDSB Trustee have confirmed attendance.
While each of the groups have hosted such events in the past, this will mark the first time all three of the ward’s active community associations work together to expand the ward’s representation at the debate. Leveraging Beacon Hill Community Association’s well-oiled debate format, Pineview and Rothwell Heights are joining in the effort to solicit questions and responsibly represent their respective communities’ priorities and concerns.
“As a non-partisan voice in our respective neighbourhoods, it’s important that our Community Associations provide its members and the broader community an opportunity to address issues pertinent to us,” says Adam Polka, Executive Board Member and Municipal Debate Liaison for RHPOA. “Our call to action is that everyone and anyone living in our constituency should go to the link provided and submit your question for the candidates - and help us help you get your voice heard, so we can meaningfully test candidates’ policies and platforms.”

The community groups hope to elicit transparency from their candidates by broadening viewership: “It is too easy for candidates to provide convenient answers to small subsets of the constituency. The more perspectives and wider audiences we can draw for an event like this, the more accountable each candidate is to their answers,” adds Polka.
By jointly coordinating this debate, the three community associations are mobilizing their efforts to build bridges across neighbourhoods and strengthen their collective communities. Tea Derakhshan, PCA Debate Liaison, underscores the importance of collaborating across associations: “By pooling our resources and our outreach, we are working towards our common goals of neighbourhood building and community representation.”

The Municipal Candidates’ Debate is on October 17, 2018 and will begin at 7pm at the Colonel By High School Cafetorium.
