  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) November 28, 2016 - Legendary Basketball Coach Henry Bibby is taking his message to the streets: It is unacceptable that 1.4 million U.S Students are homeless and many will not graduate. To take action and be part of the solution, the former NBA Champion, and Philanthropist, founded Henry Bibby's Star Athletes (HBSA) to provide free high-quality basketball camps, which will create a framework of leadership, self-confidence, and reassurance for homeless and underprivileged children in Los Angeles and Orange County. The first basketball camp weekend event will launch, in association with Stand Up for Kids and Carry Me Productions and sponsored by Gatorade, on Saturday, December 17th and Sunday, December 18, 2016, from 8:00am to 12 noon, at the Asics Sports Facility, 80 Technology Drive, Irvine, CA 92618.

The mission of the non-profit organization is to teach basketball fundamentals while promoting self-esteem, togetherness, teamwork, and sportsmanship. For the launch, HBSA has identified 12 locations/weekend dates to provide fun, interactive free basketball camps in Southern California with hopes to expand. The impact of such programs could help the disadvantaged kids with their self-confidence, physical, mental, and emotional health.

"I was driving downtown L.A and I saw all these homeless people, but I saw no kids," Bibby says, " I did some research and found out that there were 3 million homeless kids in the country and nearly 270,000 students experienced homelessness in California alone. I wanted to help." Bibby speaks passionately about how HBSA sets out to help kids beat the odds, "I found people that were willing to donate their time, money, and be of service. I want to be more than a basketball player and coach. I aspire to be someone that can help improve kids lives."

Bibby has deep-rooted ties to the Greater Los Angeles area and over many years he has given his time to youth programs, most recently a "Henry Bibby Gives Back to SoCal" event with local charities and organizations including YMCA and Heart of Los Angeles Community Center (HOLA). SlamBall Star Anthony White led interactive mini clinics and demonstrated Bibby's innovative basketball training tool: DribblePro (Spalding) which thousands of were generously donated to each group.

As the former champion head coach at USC, he led the Trojans to one of their greatest seasons in 2001 with an appearance in Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. Bibby is also the former head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks (WNBA) where he coached the celebrated basketball star Lisa Leslie. He moved on to the role of assistant coach for the successful Memphis Grizzlies NBA team. As a UCLA point-guard, he was a three-time national title winner and also played for the 76ers.

"In Southern California, I have been given a lot of opportunities to play basketball and do what I love to do," Bibby says. "It's important to me to give back so that other kids can have the experiences I've had."

Bibby and his assistant coaching staff will be present at each weekend camp program held over two consecutive weekend days (Saturday & Sunday), 4 hours each in the Los Angeles and Orange County area. Already booked on the upcoming schedule is May 7th, 8th, 2017 ( @ ) Aviation Park Gym in Redondo Beach and May 13, 14th 2017 ( @ ) USC with more to be announced dot
