- Worcester, MA-CT (1888PressRelease) September 23, 2010 - Worcester, Massachusetts -Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hall of Fame professional basketball player and award-winning author will make his first-ever Worcester appearance on Sunday October 17, 2010 at 4:00 PM at the Hanover Theatre in Worcester Mass. The lecture is free and open to the public, but reservations are required.
The event is presented by the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts in conjunction with the Harold N. Cotton Center for Leadership Excellence.
Mr. Abdul-Jabbar will tell the remarkable story of the 761st Tank Battalion, the subject of his book, Brothers in Arms. The 761st was never intended to see battle; as with many African American units during World War II, they trained mainly as a public relations gesture to sustain the support of the black community during the war. However, the Allies were so desperate for trained tank personnel in the summer of 1944 that even though General Patton initially opposed their deployment, they were called upon to fight. Heroically, the men of the 761st served on the front for more than six months, despite an extreme shortage of personnel and equipment, suffering nearly 50 percent casualties. Their efforts helped liberate some thirty towns and villages, as well as several branch concentration camps.
The Abdul-Jabbar appearance is sponsored by the Harold N. Cotton Center for Leadership Excellence, an initiative of the Federation. Harold N. Cotton was a leader in the Jewish community and the Worcester community for many years. He left a legacy of institution building, inspirational community leadership, and charitable giving. The Center was established to carry on his work. The Jewish Federation of Central Mass is dedicated to the preservation and enrichment of Jewish life while also serving the greater community good of Central Mass.
Along with the Cotton Center, this program is co-sponsored by the Henry Willis Center, the New England Region of the Anti-Defamation League, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University, and the City of Worcester Human Rights Commission.
