  • Miami, FL (1888PressRelease) November 27, 2014 - New from Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series is Key Biscayne by local authors James A. Kushlan and Kirsten N. Hines. The book boasts over 200 vintage images from this island town's long, rich history. "Many view Key Biscayne as a modern tropical paradise, but we hope to highlight its rich and varied human history that extends back to the 1500's with the Tequesta Indians and Juan Ponce de Leon's second landing in North America," Kushlan and Hines said.

The book highlights famous people that made Key Biscayne, such as the Mathesons, the Deerings and the Mackles, as well as Ralph Munroe, who oversaw the caretaking and dealings of the island. He also established traditions like the Regatta and Chowder party around Washington's birthday. Richard Nixon elevated Key Biscayne to international notoriety when he became president in 1969 and officially established his Winter White House on the island.

The Cape Florida Lighthouse, which is the oldest building in the county and the Biscayne National Park are showcased, as well as other attractions and events. "Key Biscayne's paradise feel comes in large part from the county and state parks established on either end of the island," Kushlan and Hines said.
