Barbara Deutsch Named Executive Director of Landscape Architecture Foundation

The Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) announced the appointment of a new executive director, Barbara Deutsch, ASLA. Deutsch comes to LAF from BioRegional's One Planet Communities Program in Washington, DC. She will focus on expanding LAF's influence in sustainable design. End Quote

(1888PressRelease) April 21, 2009 - The Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) has named Barbara Deutsch, ASLA, as Executive Director. Deutsch was formerly Associate Director at BioRegional for its One Planet Communities Program in Washington, D.C.

The appointment was announced by LAF President Dennis Carmichael, FASLA, who said, “Barbara has a compelling combination of energy and enthusiasm; management experience; and landscape architecture design sensibility. The Board is excited about working with her to increase the impact of landscape architecture in sustainable design and planning."

Deutsch will focus on expanding LAF’s influence and role in sustainable design. “I’m looking forward to partnering with other environmental organizations to develop joint programs which will leverage LAF’s strengths and resources and lead to greater impact solving the complex, interdisciplinary environmental problems we face today.”

Most recently with BioRegional, she was on a team that partnered with the Hunt Development Group as its sustainability consultant for the Hill East neighborhood redevelopment project in Washington, D.C. The team completed a Sustainability Action Plan which committed Hill East to be a zero carbon, zero waste, net zero water and 100 percent sustainable lifestyles community, one of only six in the world, and the first in a major U.S. city.

Before that, Deutsch was Senior Director of the Casey Trees Endowment Fund where she secured $350,000 in grant funding for strategic projects and led the 2002 Street Tree Inventory, Citizen Forester Program, and 1425 K Street Green Roof Demonstration Project.

Deutsch holds a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Washington and a B.S. in Commerce from the University of Virginia. She was awarded a Loeb Fellowship in 2006 by the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Deutsch succeeds L. Susan Everett, FASLA, whose resignation, announced last year, is effective on April 30, 2009.
