Awareness Camp on Osteoporosis - Providence Endocrine and Diabetes Specialty Centre
An awareness level regarding this bone disorder across India is as low as 10-15% and it is estimated that about 50 million Indians might be harboring weak bones.
- (1888PressRelease) October 21, 2014 - Thiruvananthapuram - Osteoporosis is a major public health problem in the world today with more than 8.9 million fractures recorded to be occurring annually. One in 3 women and one in 5 men have the possibility of sustaining a fracture during their lifetime and prevention of fracture is a huge concern in people with osteoporosis. Especially as the highest risk of a second fracture is for individuals who have sustained a prior fracture. To tackle this, it is important to identify osteoporosis in individuals at risk (SCREENING), education on treatment (EDUCATION), fall prevention and treatment.
Osteoporosis occurs when bone mass decreases quicker than the body can replace it, leading to loss of bone strength. Lack of exposure to sunlight due to long working hours, indoor working environment, and intentionally avoiding sunlight by using sunscreen leads to Vitamin D deficiency. And this has become a major contributing factor among the younger generation to suffer from osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can be easily diagnosed through a bone mineral density (BMD) scan.
The Providence Endocrine and Diabetes Specialty Center based in Trivandrum is organizing an awareness camp on osteoporosis for older individuals. The camp which is conducted by Providence every year, will include BMD screening, education sessions, fall prevention sessions, exercises for osteoporosis and dietary interventions in osteoporosis. The theme of the camp this year is ' Strong Backbone for Better Life'.
The event will be held at Hotel Ruby Arena, Trivandrum on October 26th from 8 AM to 12 Noon. You can register on the Providence website to participate in the Awareness Camp http://www.providence.co.in/osteoporosis-awareness-camp/
