Award-Winning Student Filmmaker Krisstian de Lara Pitches Online to Raise Funds Independently
Krisstian de Lara, filmmaker and media artist, turns to alternative funding sources for his latest short film, Sub Rosa, a dark story about the conflict between romantic and parental love and which is stronger in the end.
- Miami, FL (1888PressRelease) February 12, 2013 - Independent student filmmaker Krisstian de Lara is turning to the Internet to raise funds for his latest short film project, Sub Rosa, a dark story about the conflict between romantic and parental love and which is stronger in the end. With funding as the first major obstacle to getting any film off the ground, filmmakers have to become more innovative in their fundraising tactics, and the independent filmmaking community has embraced sites like Kickstarter.com.
In line with Kickstarter.com guidelines, artists have a set number of days to raise all the funds, or the project receives nothing. De Lara's film has a 13-day fundraising window left. If the allotted budget ($5,000 US) isn't raised before February 24, all pledges are cancelled and the film will not be funded.
When asked about why Kickstarter was appealing, de Lara noted, "I do believe there are many people out there who appreciate great stories, great talent and great independent films that can help us get this project on its feet. It's a matter of reaching them." An added advantage for artists is Kickstarter's merchant partner Amazon.com, which enables each project the convenience of receiving funds from anywhere in the world.
Sub Rosa is the coming-of-age story of a male teenager who has grown up under the shadow of his authoritative father. Over the course of a single summer, events transpire which transform this boy into an adult who challenges his dad in very unorthodox ways. Sub Rosa has been in development by de Lara since May of 2012. Krisstian strongly believes he will have the support to bring this memorable story to the big screen for the whole nation to see!
Sub Rosa is currently in pre-production and is supported by very talented people including Tom Musca, Giampiero Paglione, Bryan Trotman and Lu Liu, among others. "We have professional and talented crew on board but we are missing a crucial price to make this project successful: the funds," Krisstian states in the Kickstarter fundraising campaign video. All of the donated funds will be used exclusively to cover the bare necessaries such as food, transportation, location fees and equipment rental.
Our goal is to make a film that will leave people talking for days. Something that will be memorable and thought provoking. While Sub Rosa will address some sensitive and taboo topics it will be done in a professional and tasteful way. After all, this is a character driven story. It's a film being made to tell a story that has not been told before.
The film will be shot on a RED Scarlet X by Red Digital Cinema Camera Company in 4K (4096 x 2160 pixels) resolution and in 24 frames per second (fps.) Krisstian de Lara is a second year Graduate Student at the University of Miami pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Motion Pictures Production. Originally from the border communities of El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico where he worked for 9 years in the field of broadcast television. Tom Musca is de Lara's mentor and chair committee for this thesis film. Musca co-wrote the popular Warner Bros. and Academy Award nominated film, "Stand and Deliver" with Director Ramón Menéndez.

Giampiero Paglione is the producer of Sub Rosa. He has traveled around the globe to produce and direct short films. He recently helped in the production of a film in China. De Lara and Paglione meet during their graduate years at UM.
About Bryan Trotman
Bryan Trotman has always liked dark and twisted stories and de Lara detected that in most of his scripts. This story was meant to be written by him. De Lara and Trotman meet at UM and collaborated in the production of several films during their graduate years.
