Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation (myASDF) Supports Film Camp
OUCARES Hosts Seventh Annual Joey Travolta Film Camp.
- (1888PressRelease) April 29, 2012 - Schererville, IN - The Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation (www.myASDF.org), a national organization that provides direct support for families living with autism, partners with the Oakland University Center for Autism Research, Education and Support (OUCARES) every year to provide financial assistance for its Joey Travolta Film Camp.
This will be the seventh year OUCARES and Hollywood writer, actor, and director Joey Travolta will host a two-week short film camp for children with autism spectrum disorder. From August 13 to August 24, 2012, camp participants will have the rare opportunity to work with Travolta's team to write, act, direct, and edit their own films.
The Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation donated $35,000 in 2012 to help campers, ages 10 to 20, develop creative, technical, and life skills. The diverse group of campers and their eclectic interests create an amazing cinematic experience year after year.
Everyone knows Joey Travolta as the older brother of his famous brother John Travolta, but few know that he once worked as a special education instructor. As much as he loves the film industry, he says that he could not let go of his desire to help those with special needs, and that he was excited to combine both of his passions by offering film camps all over the country including the seventh annual OUCARES film camp. "I want to take everything I learned in the film industry and teach it to kids with autism," said Travolta. "I love you guys. I'm always going to be here."
The Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation shares this enthusiasm to help raise awareness and offer socializing opportunities for autistic children and adults, as well as their caregivers. By empowering participants to shoot, produce, and star in their own movies, the summer film camp enables individuals living with autism to express their creativity, improve self-esteem, and enrich their social interactions. As an added bonus, siblings and peer buddies are welcome in every part of the film-making process.
"OUCARES is proud to run many programs that improve the quality of life for individuals and their families affected by ASD," said Kathy Sweeney, director of OUCARES. "Our film camp is the most popular program we offer, and The Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation helps make the cost of the camp affordable. Without the generosity of the Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation and our other partners, we would have to almost double the tuition of the camp, which would place yet another hardship on families."
