In a brief interview the author shares what inspired the story and title.
"…growing up in Liberia, I've always wondered about the legend of the Heart Man and ritualistic killings… whether it was done for human sacrifice or the sale of organs on the black market."
This burning question led Ms. Lewis to create Heart Men; drawing on actual events that take place in many struggling societies. In the highly anticipated novel, Ophelia Lewis invites her audience on a revealing journey to Liberia, West Africa where the main character travels to defend his father against a case of ritualistic killings. Along the way, the young man is exposed to secrets of events that took place in his father's native land as well as in his family.
As a humanitarian, Ophelia Lewis is very in tune with issues that plague developing nations and uses her writings to educate, entertain, and make a difference. The novel Heart Men does all three things. Not only does it entertain and expose readers to various societal issues; it also assists in the funding of the Mariah's Buds and Jenkins' Torch Scholarships. Both educational scholarships are in memory of amazing individuals, dedicated to improving their lives and the lives of others.
