Author Danielle M. Rocheford Releases "Mommy, I Feel Funny," a Picture Book That Chronicles Her Childhood with Epilepsy
Danielle M. Rocheford releases "Mommy, I Feel Funny," a true life account of her childhood experiences with epilepsy told in picture book format, for all ages.
- (1888PressRelease) September 21, 2010 - Boston, Massachusetts - Born and raised on Long Island, New York, Danielle M. Rocheford was diagnosed with epilepsy at age two. Her epilepsy was classified as complex partial seizures, preceded by epileptic auras. The auras manifested themselves through a tingling feeling, which moved up and down Danielle's back, presenting the sensation of something following her from behind. Within her family, a young Danielle quickly coined the phrase "I feel funny" as a way to inform her parents or others that she was about to have a seizure.
In order to share her childhood viewpoint with the world, Danielle wrote "Mommy, I Feel Funny! A Child's Experience with Epilepsy." The story, based on Danielle's true life experiences, follows a young girl named Nel a few days after her first seizure. The story captures Nel's thoughts, fears and emotions, which are common in the discovery, understanding, and acceptance of epilepsy. Having lived with epilepsy throughout her youth, Danielle is able to share her feelings through a child's eye, making this picture book suitable for the learning and understanding of epilepsy to both children and parents alike.
"Mommy, I Feel Funny" was officially released in 2009, meeting positive reviews on major websites such as Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. The book to date has received overwhelming positive reviews and comments, as noted on the above listed sites, as well as on Danielle's newly launched website www.MommyIFeelFunny.com. In addition to a professionally built website, Danielle also manages her Twitter and Facebook profiles in order to connect with her fans via comments. Many of the comments found not only praise the book for its easy to understand format for children, but also the impact it has had on the parents themselves. Marie-Claire Mouche, a school teacher from Switzerland, states that when she read the book to her class, one little boy later found out that his mother had epilepsy. "The mother was happy to have the opportunity to speak about this with her 4 boys" states Ms. Mouche in a letter written to Danielle.
Recently this year, "Mommy, I Feel Funny" was translated into Spanish to apply to a broader range of individuals across the globe. "Offering the book in Spanish opens the doors wider for other's who suffer from epilepsy, but are not necessarily in English speaking areas" explains Danielle. To date, the picture book has even seen several orders come in from overseas, pushing Danielle to consider translating the book into several other dominate European languages. Danielle comments on the book by saying, "My story provides a positive reinforcement for children who live with the challenges of epilepsy. Epilepsy is still a topic not spoken about enough and much more attention is needed in order to heighten the awareness."
About Danielle M. Rocheford
Danielle is a highly acclaimed author who's lived with epilepsy for 25 years. She wrote "Mommy, I Feel Funny! A Child's Experience with Epilepsy" to help reach out to other children experiencing the same condition. Growing up with epilepsy through her entire childhood and adolescence has helped her relate to young people, as well as adults, who may be going through a similar learning process as she did. Danielle says "My goal is for the story to reach as many children, doctors, hospitals, schools, libraries and inner cities as possible, as well as the organizations that focus on epilepsy; both nationally and internationally. In addition, "Mommy, I Feel Funny!" can be used by those unfamiliar with epilepsy to better acquaint them with the disorder. Often, knowledge gained by reading a children's book leads people to search for greater understanding of a specific topic."
