The federal Labour government has said that the existing method for selecting skilled migrants, the points test, would be updated in order to find persons with the necessary skill sets for the Australian economy in the future.

The government announced on July 1 that the migrant pay threshold for temporary skilled workers will be raised to A$70,000 ($46,250) from A$53,900, which had been frozen since 2013.
According to the government, over 90% of all full-time employment in Australia currently pays more than the existing level, resulting in migrant worker exploitation.
A landmark review has discovered that Australia's migration system promotes 1.8 million guest workers to be "permanently temporary" due to severe limitations on permanent entry.
While it is not clear how much of the review will be implemented by the Albanese government, a section released prior to O'Neil's appearance stated that it would be pushed to abandon skills lists, make it possible for more workers in caring occupations, and address long wait times for family visas.
According to a piece of the review revealed prior to Clare O'Neil's address today, the government's skilled profession lists for employer sponsorship are outmoded, and there is no evidence of their performance. According to the review, skilled occupation listings "do not reflect current or anticipated skilled labour needs," such as the transition to a net-zero economy and the development of essential and sovereign skills.
