Supplies are distributed to people experiencing homelessness.
- (1888PressRelease) December 01, 2022 - Atheists Helping the Homeless DC will hold a Distribution Event on Saturday, December 10, 2022, in Silver Spring at Progress Place. (8106 Georgia Ave Silver Spring MD). Atheists Helping the Homeless DC (AHHDC) is a group of humanist volunteers operating in the Washington DC area. They distribute Hygiene Kits to people experiencing homelessness. Distribution events are staffed by volunteers and last from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Approximately 100 clients are served.
AHHDC distributes packs of easy-to-carry toiletries and other items. They provide materials that people without homes may not have as they sleep in tents, cars, shelters, or even couch surfing. The items are small enough that they can easily be carried throughout the day, between shelters, in a backpack or in a shopping bag.
Items that have been distributed include: Backpacks, Bar soap, Blankets (as available), Candy (small), Compressed cotton towels, Deodorant, Face masks, Face towels, Feminine hygiene products, Flashlights with batteries, Gloves (in winter), Hand cream/body lotion, Individually wrapped toothpicks with flosser end, Lip balm, Nail Clippers, Nonperishable Food, Pull-down hats (in winter), Safety Razors with shaving cream, Scarves, Shampoo, Socks, Toothbrushes and toothpaste, Towelettes/wipes, and Underwear.
AHHDC is a nonprofit charity and depends upon donations and small grants. AHHDC has received support from the American Humanist Association, Go Humanity Food Security Grant, 4imprint.com, and Wegmans Markets.
Since November 2021 has been an IRS-certified, nonprofit charity, 501(c)(3).
Presently, they serve about 100 clients at each monthly Distribution Event. They distribute numerous hygiene items including socks, soap, safety razors, deodorant, nail clippers, and more. They distribute canvas bags to carry items in. They now also routinely distribute gently used shoes, jackets, and blankets. Our next goal is to distribute twice a month, reaching about 200 people.
