ASTM Revises Standards for Children's Chairs and Stools
The standards organization, ASTM, has updated its safety specification for children's chairs and stools. Published in May 2016, the new standard, ASTM F2613-16, replaces ASTM F2613-14.
- (1888PressRelease) July 29, 2016 - The standards organization, ASTM International (ASTM), has revised its safety standard for Children's Chairs and Stools. Published in May 2016, the new standard, ASTM F2613-16, replaces ASTM F2613-14.
The new standard has added a number of changes, including:
• Addition of a definition for chairs with side containment
• Revision of the definition for rigid frame
• Changing the requirement and test method for stability
• Addition of standards for sideways stability for chairs with side containment
• Addition of a new rational for the stability test method and test equipment
The ASTM standard relates to a chair or stool intended for use by a single child who can get in and out of the seat without assistance. The seat will be 15 inches or less and can be with or without a rocking base. The standard does not relate to products used in a commercial setting, seats that do not have a rigid frame - for example, a bean bag, or seat that incorporate a restraint system.
ASTM has more than 30,000 members, drawn from over 140 countries and its standards are referenced in the regulations of several states and countries. Following the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act of 1995, which requires the federal government to use privately developed consensus standards whenever possible, ASTM standards have been incorporated or referenced in many US federal, state, and municipal government regulations.
Companies manufacturing children's chairs and stools are now advised to check their products against the revised standard. SGS can assist companies in the development of juvenile products and childcare articles and has been selected by the JPMA as the Principal Laboratory and Program Administrator.
