Asia Cup Postponed Until 2022 Due to Covid-19 Pandemic: Report
The Asia Cup 2020 has been postponed to 2021 after the covid outbreak last year.
- (1888PressRelease) April 22, 2021 - Around the globe, the deadly coronavirus pandemic has negatively impacted almost everything including sports. Several cricket events were either canceled or postponed. Even those that have been taking place, happen in bio-secure bubbles because of the threat of the virus.
The Asia Cup 2020 has been postponed to 2021 after the covid outbreak last year. Moreover, the latest information suggests that the tournament has been postponed again for the same reason.
On Sunday, The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) released a statement stating that the Asia Cup has been postponed to 2022. The PCB holds the rights to conduct the tournament and considering Pakistan and UAE as two venues for the tournament.
The PCB offered the choice to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to swap hosting rights for the tournament. Also, the SLC accepted the proposal and the Asia Cup is now planned to be played in the Island country.
As the world is still overshadowed by Covid-19, the Asia Cup tournament will be postponed until 2022.
The PCB issued a statement, “PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani briefed the BoG on matters relating to the International Cricket Council as well as this year’s ICC T20 World Cup and the ACC Asia Cup, which has now been postponed to 2022."
Due to the Asia Cup postponement, cricket fans could possibly get entertained by the India vs Pakistan event in the ICC T20 World Cup this year. However, as the two countries aren’t on the same page of political relations, therefore bilateral cricket series has been missing from the calendars.
Previously, the Asia Cup was held in 2018 in UAE and the Indian cricket team had won the tournament. The Indian team was led by Rohit Sharma while Virat Kohli was on break. Further, India also holds the highest number of Asia Cup victories (7) in the cricket tournament’s history.
