  • (1888PressRelease) September 06, 2013 - BOULDER, Colo. - ASD Inc., a PANalytical company and the global leader in high-performance NIR analytical instrumentation and material analysis solutions, is now accepting submissions for its annual Students in Mining TerraSpec Instrument Program, created to stimulate innovative research in mining education, exploration and production using near-infrared spectroscopy.

As the leader in mineral analysis instrumentation, ASD developed the program to support student researchers whose projects will benefit from the temporary use of a full-range TerraSpec 4 Hi-Res mineral spectrometer system for mineral analysis. Submissions that are inventive, bridge boundaries between traditional disciplines and extend the frontiers of mining exploration or production will be given additional consideration. The research project can be opportunistic and need not have an immediate practical application or guarantee of success.

"The mining community is very supportive of student research, especially when the project is inventive, overlaps disciplines and utilizes advanced technology like the TerraSpec 4 mineral analyzer," said Chris Sherry, geologist and senior mining market manager at ASD. "We expect to see some very interesting submissions from a variety of mining education disciplines."

Students who are enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. program within an accredited college or university are encouraged to submit their requests by the firm deadline of November 15. The selected recipients will be announced in late December 2013. Eligible students must be enrolled in a program within the United States or any country where Carnet documentation for shipments is accepted.

Students granted the use of a TerraSpec mineral analyzer, which includes The Spectral Geologist (TSG) Pro mineral analysis software, are eligible to receive up to $500 to cover potential publication charges and/or travel assistance for the presentation of an accepted abstract at a relevant scientific conference. Recipients are also entitled to a single $500 travel stipend to attend a one-day feasibility and modeling training session at ASD's headquarters in Boulder, Colo. Students can opt to participate in the training via webinar as well.

Titles of past projects include "Hyperspectral remote sensing in mineral exploration applications: using ammonium-illite as a pathfinder for gold."
