  • (1888PressRelease) April 05, 2011 - On April 22, widely recognized as Earth Day, The Bra Recyclers seek to remind environmentally conscious individuals and groups of the important impact textile recycling can have. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, over 12.7 million tons of textile waste was produced in 2009 (http://www.epa.gov/osw/conserve/materials/textiles.htm). This Earth Day, The Bra Recyclers ask women globally to turn to their drawers to help save the Earth.

The Bra Recyclers specialize in the recycling and redistribution of bras to women in need and to be recycled into secondary products. According to The Bra Recyclers CEO, Elaine Birks-Mitchell, "An estimated 80% of women do not have the right size bra. These poorly fitting bras are often thrown away because many women do not know what else to do with them. We provide a place to put those bras to use in a socially and environmentally conscious way".

According to Earth Day's Official Website, www.EarthDay.org, Earth Day began in 1970 as a movement by then U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson following an oil spill in Santa Barbara in 1969. On April 22 1970, 20 million Americans took part in massive coast-to-coast events and rallies.
"Earth Day a great day to do some spring cleaning in your bra drawer. If 20 million Americans took part in the first Earth Day and left an impact, imagine the impact that 20 million donated bras could have for deserving women and girls in need," said Birks-Mitchell.

If you do not have any new or used bras to donate, The Bra Recyclers encourage Americans nationwide to find an event to participate in instead. "There are events going on all over the country on April 22. Where you donate a bra and prevent textile waste, plant a tree, or watch your energy or water consumption for the day, there is an environmentally friendly activity for everyone," Birks-Mitchell said.
