(1888PressRelease) March 29, 2012 - Arenal Energy Corporation, which develops and markets safe, proprietary green products, has announced the launch of MIL-BAC™, a bio-based remediation product which removes contaminants from the environment and mitigates ecological damage caused by fuel spill contamination. MIL-BAC™ was developed and is manufactured by Arenal Energy's technology partner, Micro-Bac International, Inc.®, a leading biotechnology research and development firm in Round Rock, Texas.
A major environmental problem facing the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and large multi-national defense industry contractors and suppliers comes from fuel contamination of soil and groundwater. To solve this problem, the United States military is vigorously pursuing one of the biggest environmental cleanup and remediation programs in history.
In order to simplify logistics, the DOD and member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have adopted a single fuel, JP-8, for a wide variety of uses: as jet fuel, tank fuel, to replace diesel fuel in tactical ground vehicles, in electrical generators and for heaters and stoves. Unfortunately, production and transportation of billions of gallons of JP-8 annually makes this uniform military fuel one of the most spilled toxic substances in the world. JP-8 is projected to remain in use at least until 2025.
In addition to contamination at operating facilities, a large number of military bases in Europe, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Pacific Rim and the Middle East are being closed, and international treaties require the United States to perform site remediation before returning the bases to the host countries, which are extremely sensitive to environmental issues, especially groundwater and soil contamination.
Soil contamination requiring clean up is present at approximately 250,000 sites in the European Environment Agency (EEA) member countries, according to recent estimates.
MIL-BAC™ is designed to meet this environmental challenge. It is a safe, efficient and natural way to remove fuel contamination from the environment and mitigate the ecological damage caused by military and defense industry operations.
MIL-BAC™ has been specifically formulated to remediate the toxic substances found in JP-8 such as xylene, toluene, benzene, ethyl benzene, naphthalene and kerosene. MIL-BAC™ is effective to treat contaminated soil, surface waterways and underground plumes in groundwater from fuel spills, broken underground transfer lines or leaking storage tanks.
MIL-BAC™ contains no hazardous components. The product is non-toxic, non-pathogenic, biodegradable and meets Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements for release into the environment.
