Area Winners of Wilson College Women's History Month Essay Contest Announced
Seven area high school students were recognized by Wilson College recently for their entries in the college's first annual National Women's History Month High School Essay Contest. The awards were presented in a special ceremony celebrating women's history held March 21 on the Wilson campus.
- Harrisburg-Lebanon-Carlisle, PA (1888PressRelease) April 11, 2012 - Mariah Varner, a student at Carlisle High School, won the $150 first prize for her essay tracing the history and the lasting effects of Title IX legislation, which required schools receiving federal funds to provide equal opportunities and funding for girls and woman. Title IX vastly increased the number of girls and women participating in sports.
Katelyn Wingerd, a student at Gettysburg Area High School, received the $100 second-place award for her essay about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
Kirstyn Sokolsky, also from Carlisle High School, won the $50 third-place award for her essay on Maud Younger, the "Millionaire Waitress," a woman from a privileged background who fought for better working conditions for women - including an eight-hour day and better pay - during the early 1900s.
The following four students earned honorable mentions: Natalie Holder of Chambersburg Area Senior High School and Marshall Powell, Lauren Metcalf and Jenny Wood, all of Carlisle High School.
Wilson's National Women's History Month High School Essay Contest was sponsored by the college's Hankey Center, Women's Studies Program and C. Elizabeth Boyd '33 Archives.
