- (1888PressRelease) April 08, 2011 - The AMHS Mock Trial team had a 3rd place finish at the 2011 State Championship Meet this weekend. The team finished with a 3-1 record, and won 10 out of 12 ballots in their 4 trials to earn the high ranking. This is the best finish in school history, eclipsing the 5th place ranking from 2007. It also marks the highest-ever ranking for a team from Snohomish County. The annual meet was held March 25-27 at the Thurston County Courthouse in Olympia, and featured the 22 best teams from all over Washington State. There were 60 total mock trial teams competing throughout Washington in 2011.
Mock Trial allows students to participate in a true-to-life courtroom drama. Teams of attorneys and witnesses prepare a fictitious case for trial and compete at district levels in front of real judges in actual courtrooms. "Juries" of attorneys rate the teams for their presentation, while the presiding judges rule on the motions, objections, and ultimately the merits. Participants develop critical thinking and analytical skills, learn the art of oral advocacy, and gain a respect for the role of law and the judiciary.
OUTSTANDING AMHS PERFORMANCES
The following AMHS students received "outstanding" nominations: Outstanding Witness Nominations ─ Kennan Mighell, Dan Harris, and Stephen Oswald. Outstanding Attorney Nominations ─ Annie Dang, Amy Purdy, Jonathan Lucas and Brandon Alfond. Other team members included Sarah Colombo, Adam Sundholm, Collin Daviscourt, Nick DeVoll, Jake Dini, Alex Langlois, Meghan Nelson and bailiff Tiernan Dwyer.
Head Coach Roger Brodniak was elated with the team's performance. "They worked hard, bonded together, and had the mental toughness to turn in their best performances of the year at just the right time," he said. "This was a very special group of talented, respectful, faith-driven young people."

Approximately 50 students are participating in the club in 2010, including a freshman-sophomore team for beginners known as the "C-Team". The Varsity team won District Championships in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010, and qualified both its Varsity and JV teams to state in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Mock Trial regularly places among the top teams in Washington, finishing 5th place in 2007, 6th in 2008, 12th in 2009 and 6th in 2010. In 2008, the team qualified for the first national meet in school history, advancing to the American Mock Trial Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina.
