Aqua Comms to Speak on Strategic Relationships Integral to Delivering Content to the Network Edge and Convergence of Subsea and Terrestrial Networks

(1888PressRelease) December 21, 2016 - DUBLIN - Aqua Comms DAC ("Aqua Comms"), the operator of Ireland's first dedicated subsea fibre-optic network interconnecting New York, Dublin and London, today announces that its Chief Executive Officer, Nigel Bayliff, and Head of Network Engineering, Jol Paling, will speak at PTC'17. The event takes place January 15-18, 2017 at the Hilton Hawaiian® Waikiki Beach Resort in Honolulu, Hawaii.

On Sunday, January 15 at 3:30 p.m., Mr. Bayliff will join executives from Microsoft, TelePacific Communications, EdgeConneX® and Digital Realty for a roundtable titled, "Key Business and Legal Issues Associated With Delivering Content to the Edge." Given the heightened demand for mobile applications, the proliferation of the cloud and the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), there is an increasing need for content to be available at the edge of the network, closer to the end-user. Much of the industry's attention has been focused on edge network architectures from a technical standpoint, but as more content is distributed to the edge, players throughout the industry are building strategic relationships to enhance service quality and remain competitive. Mr. Bayliff will examine the key issues to consider when entering strategic alliances, common pitfalls to avoid and contracting best practices.

On Tuesday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m., Mr. Paling will join executives from Ciena®, Hibernia Networks, AlohaNAP, Infinera and Equinix for a roundtable titled, "Convergence of Undersea and Terrestrial Networks - Where the Land and Sea Unite!" With the increasing demand for direct data centre to data centre connectivity over the last few years, there has been a corresponding increase in the number of submarine systems designed to allow the placement of the transmission equipment in major cities, rather than in traditional cable landing station locations. This trend has continued with ever-longer terrestrial routes, to the extent that subsea networks simply become another amplifier segment on a wider integrated terrestrial/subsea network. During the roundtable, Mr. Paling will discuss network protection mechanisms and the impact that extending the network has had on achievable traffic capacity, and how new technologies, including 8QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation), will be applied to realise this increased capacity.

"As we've observed with our own transatlantic subsea fibre-optic network, building these larger systems brings ever-increasing challenges with respect to the technical and commercial considerations of PoP to PoP connectivity," comments Mr. Paling. "It's therefore imperative to explore new technologies capable of extending the network's traffic capacity, while considering the physical infrastructure requirements, project challenges and costs of reaching subsea networks further into the terrestrial domain."
